Put the lime in the coconut and make some midnight margaritas; there’s officially going to be a Practical Magic 2!
Warner Bros. announced that the sequel to the 1998 cult classic is coming on September 18, 2026. But that’s not the only exciting news. Both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman have returned!
The pair, who now both have a Best Actress in a Leading Role Oscar apiece, starred in Practical Magic as the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian.

“We come to this place for magic,” said Nicole Kidman on stage with Sandra Bullock at the 2026 CinemaCon to promote the upcoming film.
Nicole went on to share some details about the film’s plot.

“Midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof and also have our past catching up with us,” she said. “We have our destinies, and the family. I think it’s going to be really, really fun.”
“Getting to return to these characters that have been so loved and so shared, it really has been magical,” she continued. “And being back together, it just clicked.”
“We rebuilt the original house on the cliff,” said Sandra. “We filled that house with many old and new characters that you’ll love and brought Alice Hoffman’s Book of Magic to life.”
The official trailer has finally been released (watch it above). It features the iconic song, a cup stirring itself and Nicole and Sandra’s characters explaining their curse to Lee Pace, who’s joining the cast.
“Everyone we love dies a really horrible death,” the sisters tell Lee Pace, who’s joining the cast. “It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”
This has led fans to believe that they didn’t actually break the curse in the first film. Further evidenced by Aidan Quinn, who was the love interest of Sandra Bullock’s Sally Owens not joining the cast list.
The original film, based on the book of the same name by Alice Hoffman, follows Sally (played by Sandra) and Gillian (played by Nicole) as they deal with their family curse: any man an Owens woman falls in love with dies.
In terms of plot, considering Sandra’s comment, it appears that Practical Magic 2 will be an adaptation of The Book of Magic. In it, Sally and Gillian try to save the man Sally’s now-grown-up daughter loves from the Owens curse.
Is there really a Practical Magic 2 coming out?
Yes! Filming has officially wrapped for Practical Magic 2.
We know that Akiva Goldsman, of The Da Vinci Code fame and who wrote the first Practical Magic, is writing the screenplay for the Practical Magic sequel and Denise Di Novi, of Little Women fame and who produced the first Practical Magic, is producing.
Sandra and Nicole are producing the Practical Magic sequel, too.
What is the spin-off of Practical Magic?
Back in 2019, HBO Max was developing a Practical Magic spinoff series that was going to be based on Alice’s prequel book, titled Rules of Magic, but production halted for unknown reasons.
Rules of Magic (the book) follows sisters Franny and Jet Owens (played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest in the 1998 film) as they navigate the Owens curse in 1960s New York with their brother Vincent.
Perhaps if the Practical Magic sequel is a success, the Rules of Magic series adaptation might go back into development… Fingers crossed!
Who stars in Practical Magic 2?
As aforementioned, both Nicole and Sandra will reprise their roles in the sequel. Original cast members Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest will also reprise their roles.
In upsetting news to many fans of the original film, Evan Rachel Wood will not be reprising her role as Kylie Owens, Sandra Bullock’s character’s elder daughter.
She wrote, “I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
Joining the cast are Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Joey King. Joey recently sported a red hairdo at Wimbledon 2025, and Maisie is a brunette. At first, it was speculated that the two could be playing younger versions of Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest’s characters. However, they are playing Sandra’s daughters, Kylie and Antonia, from the first movie, now grown up and potentially dealing with the return of the Owens’ curse.
Also joining the case are Lee Pace (Foundation), Solly McLeod (House of the Dragon), and Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai). However, there are no details about what roles the men are playing. Given the ages of Solly and Xolo, it could be that they are playing opposite Joey and Maisie’s characters.
Unfortunately, Aidan Quinn will not be reprising his role as Gary Hallet, the investigator who falls in love with Sally Owens.

When does Practical Magic 2 release?
As we mentioned above, the sequel won’t be released until September 18, 2026.
Until then we’ll be throwing spilt salt over our left shoulder, keeping rosemary by our garden gate, planting lavender for luck, and falling in love whenever we can…
