NRL fans and fellow players are sending congratulations after Brisbane Broncos champion Hayley Maddick announced she’s pregnant and will miss the upcoming season. Maddick made her State of Origin debut for Queensland in 2025 and helped the Broncos win the NRLW premiership.
But she’s now stepping away to start a family and won’t play in 2026. “Last year was such a special one for me, I achieved two big goals on the field, so it feels like the right time to embrace motherhood,” she said.

“The Broncos have been incredibly supportive throughout this time and I’m grateful for that. I’ll still be around the squad this season, helping out where I can and cheering the girls on from the sidelines. I’m looking forward to staying connected with the team and being part of the journey in a different way.”
Broncos NRLW coach Scott Prince was among the many to share their delight. “This is a really exciting for Hayley and her partner, and everyone at the Broncos is absolutely thrilled for her.
“She’s a much-loved member of our squad and I know all of the girls will rally around her and support her every step of the way. We’re one big footy family and we’ll be right behind her as she prepares for motherhood, alongside the great support she has from her family on the Sunshine Coast. Hayley will still be around the group at training and on game days, and it’ll be special for everyone to share this journey with her over the coming months.”

Maddick is the second player in recent weeks to announce she’s pregnant, joining Cowboys and Jillaroos player Jakiya Whitfeld. It means Whitfeld will also miss the entire NRLW season and won’t be available for the end of year World Cup.
“Becoming a parent is one of life’s great milestones and we’re proud to support her through this exciting time ahead,” said the Cowboys’ head of NRLW and women’s elite pathways Anita Creenaune. “Our focus remains on ensuring she has the flexibility, care and support she needs.”
Maddick’s announcement sparked a flood of congratulations on social media. One person wrote: “Congrats and all the best Hayley.” Another commented: “Congratulations, she’s going to be an amazing mum!” While a third added: “You’re going to be missed dearly, the fans will be hoping you and your partner have a lovely healthy baby.”
