Millbank requested that the team build with locally sourced, eco-conscious materials, and Ghoniem delivered—and then some. “The existing private vacation residence, built from concrete, was in severe disrepair—literally soaked and crumbling apart due to severe water damage,” Ghoniem remembers. After several months of drying injections plus external repairs, she applied the cinnamon-hued render, which was a recycled earth-based material, then worked with the local community to bring her designs to life. “In the spirit of embracing the contemporary creative community, we collaborated with the country’s most innovative makers and artisans, who experimented with natural and recycled materials to craft our otherworldly designs,” she explains. “Our custom furniture and furnishings are made from upcycled plastics, banana leaf, reclaimed timbers, and bamboo. Even the suite curtains are hand-dyed from indigo, mango, coconut and ketapang leaf extracts.”
