SHANE van Gisbergen will line up from the pole position for tomorrow’s NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Sonoma Raceway.
The effort is his sixth career O’Reilly Series pole, and the third of his career in the class at Sonoma.
The SuperFile Chevrolet was in the unfavourable first group of qualifying, due to the entry’s part-time nature.
Earlier in the day, he set the second-fastest time in practice.
In that session, Austin Green walked away from a significant crash at the final hairpin.
The drive in the second tier is set to be his third and final aboard the JR Motorsports entry this season, after earlier this year winning at the Circuit of the Americas and finishing eighth at Watkins Glen, after suffering contact in the pits from stablemate Connor Zilisch.
Tomorrow’s O’Reilly Series race is set to start at 7:30am AEST, with that race following on from qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series.
Van Gisbergen will be looking to earn his second successive Cup pole, after claiming Saturday honours last time out at Naval Base Coronado.
That race, however, didn’t go to plan for the Kiwi, who was swept up into a nine-car wreck started by Austin Hill.
Coming into the weekend, SVG is now placed 17th in the point standings, with his work cut out to make the season-ending Chase.
