Laredo native Marco Raya is officially a major leaguer.
The 2020 United South graduate made his MLB debut in the Minnesota Twins’ 8-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies on June 27. The right-hander entered in the eighth inning and closed out the game. Raya’s debut got off to a rough start as he walked the first batter he faced, Cole Carrigg, before surrendering a two-run home run to Kyle Karros.
But Raya settled in after the homer, retiring five of the next seven batters he faced and not allowing another run. He finished his debut allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings. He did not factor into the decision.
Raya, just 23 years old, earned the call-up after a dominant stretch at Triple-A. Since the start of May, he allowed eight runs while posting a 24:2 K:BB ratio over 25.2 innings and did not allow a run or issue a walk over seven appearances in June.
Raya’s next MLB appearance could come close to home as the Twins open a three-game series against the Houston Astros on June 29.
