Essendon interim coach Dean Solomon says he will see out his contract at Tullamarine even if he is overlooked for the senior coaching role.

Solomon suffered another disappointing defeat on Sunday at Marvel Stadium, losing to North Melbourne by 14 points.

The margin concealed the manner of the defeat; eight players failed to record a tackle and only three applied one.

Essendon officially launched its search for a new coach this week by unveiling the panel tasked with selecting the club’s next senior mentor.

Solomon answered four questions on the process post-game, declaring he’ll fill the water bottles if he has to next year to see Essendon improve.

“I am contracted until next year, so whether I am filling water bottles at halftime, assistant coach, whatever, I’m here,” Solomon said.

“I love this footy club, it’s a great footy club and we’re in a spot right now – it’s been a tough period of time for a long time.

“But I want to be in here rolling my sleeves up helping this football club, whatever that role is, I will play my role within that.

“I really want to see our club getting back to being a great club, on and off the field, if I play a small role in that I am really happy.”

Solomon initially wanted to wait until the end of the season to make his decision but admits the new panel has fast-tracked that timeline.

“Initially that was my thought process and I understand there’s a panel put in place and the process will start,” he said.

“At some stage there’s a conversation that will need to be had, but I am assuming the short term, the next two or three weeks, I’ve got just solely focus on this team.

“At some stage, absolutely, I’ve got to make a decision one way or another and have that conversation with the club.”

Solomon has conceded four defeats as interim coach of Essendon having also lost three as interim coach of the Gold Coast Suns in 2017.

Clarkson: “We didn’t have the polish” | 09:51

But he says the past month has made no alterations to his appetite to be a senior coach.

“No, I love coaching and I’ve been through this before,” he said.

“This is what footy does: it stresses you, it tests you and, again, we find out about people.

“Whether we’re ready to roll the sleeves up and get to work, and there’s only one way out of it and it’s getting to work… if it wasn’t a challenge, it wouldn’t be worth it.

“This is why we do it, we want to see our great club back to where it once was and, as I said, if I play a small role in that, I am here to do it.”
