Socceroos legend Craig Foster did not hold back following the Netherlands shock exit against Morocco in the Round of 32.

The respected Stan Sport pundit wrote on social media that Morocco was the “only team pushing to actually win the game in extra time” and criticised the Dutch side for looking deeply uncomfortable on the world stage.

“Not for the first time, we see a Netherlands at unease with its own football history, unable to any longer live up to its beginnings, and certainly not its legends and totems,” Foster wrote on X.

“That mantle of beauty, of progress, of innovation, now rests elsewhere.”

The penalty shootout loss marks the earliest exit from a FIFA World Cup in the Netherlands’ football history.

They weren’t the only giants to fall on Tuesday AEST, either.

Germany exited in similarly shocking fashion after being beaten on penalties to Paraguay, two traditional European powerhouses were dumped out by spirited underdogs.

Speaking on Stan Sport’s Added Time, former Socceroos player Scott McDonald backed Foster’s assessment, agreeing that the North African side was fully deserving of their victory against the Dutch.

“I thought on the balance of play, Morocco, for me, deserved to go through just with their performance,” he said.

Amy Harrison went a step further and spoke about the Netherlands’ dramatic decline over their final 90 minutes of the tournament.

“I think (the Netherlands have) done it to themselves, unfortunately. I think that was probably the worst ninety minutes of the World Cup,” she said on Added Time.

“It felt like they were playing to not lose, as opposed to the group games where they were playing to win, and they were exciting, they were relentless. Even (on) the coverage, Zlatan actually said the same.

“He said that he was super disappointed with the way that they played from the get-go. There was no fluidity in what they were doing up front.

“Morocco were excellent. They were playing with no fear and I think if you’re looking at the complete performance, they probably did deserve to win the match.”
