The Travelers Championship is held just a few short miles from ESPN’s campus in Bristol, Ct. That means that over the course of a tournament week in sleepy central Connecticut, there are bound to be a few random encounters between athletes and some of the world’s most visible sports journalists, but few have ever caused a stir quite like this.
On Saturday, ESPN anchor Gary Striewski posted a video to his TikTok where he told the story of bumping into Sahith Theegala and his fiancée Juju Chan in a local coffee shop. According to Striewski, he recognized Chan from social media where Chan is a minor personality with about 47,000 followers on Instagram. While Theegala was waiting for the couple’s drinks, Striewski went over and grabbed a table right next to where Chan was sitting, leaned in and said, “has anyone spotted you yet?”

Chan reportedly replied, “I guess now.” That was the extent of the interaction, but Striewski clearly felt the comment and demeanor from Chan crossed a line, because he jumped on TikTok and took the encounter public. Because this is the year 2026, Chan quickly got wind of Striewski’s video and replied with her side of the story.
“The interaction that he’s explaining did not happen the way he’s saying it did,” she said on Instagram. “He’s continuing to let people believe a false narrative …
“I was sitting in this coffee shop. Sahith was getting our coffee … This person comes and sits three inches away from me … As this person is sitting down, (he) directly says, ‘Has anyone spotted you yet? To me, that’s not a normal thing that people would say to me. I don’t know who this person is. It’s a weird comment to me, but I looked over and I just laughed. I said, ‘I guess now.’ I said it lightheartedly. I was uncomfortable with the comment, but I was also trying to laugh it off…”
After Chan posted her reply, a host of golf personalities, including Paige Spiranac and Theegala, replied expressing their support.

All in all, this feels like much ado about nothing, but from the outside looking in it seems like Striewski turned a standard bogey into a triple. It will all blow over soon enough, but if there’s one lesson to take from all this, it comes from Theegala:
Always support your wife, fellas, and you’ll live a long, happy life.
