Shenendehowa High School graduate Kevin Huerter is staying put with the Detroit Pistons.

Shams Charania of ESPN reported Monday that the 27-year-old Huerter intends to sign a 3-year, $27 million contract to remain with the Pistons, who traded for the 6-foot-6 3-point shooting specialist this past February.

Huerter split the 2025-26 season, his eighth in the NBA, between Chicago and Detroit. 

After averaging 10.9 points in 23.6 minutes per game over 44 games with the Bulls, he was traded to Detroit in February alongside Dario Saric as part of a three-team deal between the Bulls, Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves that also involved Jaden Ivey, Mike Conley and draft compensation changing hands.

In Detroit, Huerter appeared in 25 regular-season games for a Pistons team that finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference. In 20.5 minutes per game, he averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He also appeared in five playoff games for the Pistons, who were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

A star guard at Shenendehowa, Huerter helped Shen win the 2015 Class AA state title during his junior season, then won another Section 2 title as a senior in 2016 en route to a state semifinal loss during a season in which he was selected as Mr. New York State Basketball. He finished his high school career second on Shenendehowa’s all-time scoring list with 1,512 points. His No. 3 jersey was retired by the school in January 2025.

After graduating, Huerter headed to the University of Maryland, where he started 65 games over two seasons before declaring for the 2018 NBA Draft. Selected 19th overall by the Atlanta Hawks, Huerter spent his first four NBA seasons in Atlanta and helped the team reach the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals before being traded to the Sacramento Kings in July 2022.

Huerter spent parts of three seasons in Sacramento, averaging a career-high 15.2 points in 2022-23, but also suffered a left shoulder injury that caused him to miss the final stretch of the 2023-24 season. In February 2025, he was traded to Chicago as part of a deal that sent Zach LaVine to the Kings.

In 551 career regular-season games, Huerter has put up 11.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 44.2% from the field and 36.8% from 3-point range. He’s also averaged nine points in 35 career postseason games.
