Victoria Mboko made history at the Canadian Open, defeating four Grand Slam champions on her way to the title.

The 18-year-old has cemented her place as one of the brightest young talents on the WTA Tour alongside Mirra Andreeva, who won the Indian Wells title this year.

One must consider whether either of these talented stars can lift their maiden Grand Slam crown in the near future. Their talent certainly suggests both of these players can do so, especially when considering their performances at WTA 1000 events in 2025.

A former Grand Slam champion has weighed in on this conversation, discussing who out of Andreeva or Mboko will win their first Grand Slam title.

Former Wimbledon champion Lindsay Davenport has had her say.

Lindsay Davenport predicts that Mirra Andreeva will win a Grand Slam before Victoria Mboko

Lindsay Davenport, the 1999 Wimbledon Ladies Singles champion, has weighed in on the potential future success of two bright WTA stars.

On the Tennis Channel Live Podcast, Davenport was asked for her prediction regarding the first Grand Slam winner out of Victoria Mboko and Mirra Andreeva.

Davenport replied: “Andreeva. With her age, and she’s got a lot she can still improve on. I think she does it.”

It is easy to understand why Davenport has made this prediction.

Andreeva has been a mainstay on the WTA Tour since breaking through as a 16-year-old at Wimbledon in 2023. Since then, the Russian has gone from strength to strength, winning her first WTA 1000 title at 2025 Indian Wells and has reaching the quarter-final stage or better at three Grand Slam tournaments so far.

In contrast, for all of Victoria Mboko’s undoubted talent, she lacks experience at the Grand Slam stage. However, the 18-year-old demonstrated her ability to win a seven-match tournament at the Canadian Open, and should be considered a ‘dark horse’ for the US Open title.

The US Open’s recent history of teenage winners

Based on the recent history of the US Open, it would not be a total shock to see either Victoria Mboko or Mirra Andreeva lifting the US Open Ladies Singles title in September.

After all, 18-year-old Emma Raducanu stunned her peers by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open.

Just two years before her, 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu won the title.

While not a teenager, Lindsay Davenport was a young player when she won her first Grand Slam title at the 1998 US Open. The American was aged just 22 when she lifted the Flushing Meadows crown.
