A man has shared his frustration with his boss after he was summoned to work during his agreed-upon day off.
The employee took to Reddit last week to explain that he had booked a full day of leave to attend a doctor’s appointment, which his manager had approved.
Then, while sitting in the doctors’ waiting room, he received an unexpected text message.
“My boss approved my day off a month ago for a doctor’s appointment”, he wrote.
“I am currently sitting in the waiting room and he texts me.”
The blunt message read: “Can you come in later and work half a day?”
The employee was livid and declared he would not be responding to his boss’s request.
“Not only am I not coming in, but I’m not going to text him back. A day off means the whole day,” he declared.
People flooded the comments praising the employee for the way he handled the situation, and agreeing that they wouldn’t have responded either.
“I don’t reply to my phone at all. If you want to talk to me, do it when I’m at work. Beyond that, I’m not on call,” one commenter stated.
Another user added: “Yeah, let the precedent be you can’t be reached on your days off, then they will stop asking.
“If you reply every time, then you get the reputation of ‘not being a team player’ instead of someone who just isn’t on their phone constantly.”
However, others disagreed and said it would have been “sensible” to politely respond to the boss.
“Boss asked nicely, a decent response is just being a normal person,” one said.
“Maintain boundaries, but don’t be an a******,” another person chimed in.
“A text back to politely decline costs you nothing. Extending reasonable grace and being more considerate of others is a policy that will foster better relationships and future success.”
A third Redditor echoed: “Responding does not ruin your day off. There is going to come a time in your life when you will need someone, even when they are off or have other obligations.
“I’m sure you are going to hope they don’t handle that situation the same way you are.”
Meanwhile, a fourth suggested “waiting an hour” before answering, that way “the manager often has already phoned three other people and one probably said yes”.
