As they continue their hunt for a defensive wing presence, the Lakers are monitoring Jonathan Kuminga’s free agency situation.
“The team, according to league sources who were granted anonymity to freely discuss the Lakers’ offseason moves, is still seeking a young wing to help its perimeter defense,” per Dan Woike of The Athletic.
“A high-upside swing receiving significant consideration, per league sources, is former Golden State Warrior and Atlanta Hawk Jonathan Kuminga, whose $24.3 million team option was recently declined by Atlanta.”
Lakers interested again in Jonathan Kuminga
Jonathan Kuminga became an unrestricted free agent after the Atlanta Hawks decided to decline his 2026-27 team option worth $24.3 million.
He experienced a highly turbulent 2025-26 campaign that saw him being traded away from the Golden State Warriors, ultimately spending the second half of the season with the Hawks.
Across 36 total regular-season appearances for Atlanta and Golden State, he averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists with 46.3% shooting from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.
Kuminga boasts impressive explosiveness, athleticism and versatility, which would perfectly fit the Lakers as a dynamic defensive cog in continuing to build around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
