NZ soap star reveals he had no idea his last day of filming was just that.

Shortland Street star Ben Barrington has revealed he was let go by producers after a decade as Dr. Drew McCaskill, with his last episode screening in April.

“I didn’t know it was my final day. It was like any other,” Barrington has told podcast Fork’s Sake.

“It’s just one of those things. You find out one day that you don’t work there any more.”

Barrington joined the Kiwi soap in 2015 as cosmetic surgeon, Drew McCaskill, who dabbles in general surgery.

In 2024 he told TV Tonight, “He’s really like, egotistical and always sort of had something to prove.

“I’ve been involved in those kinds of storylines where I’m ostensibly very alpha and high status. But it’s a recurring theme that I get these ideas to outdo someone, to one up somebody, and then that blows up in my face somehow.”

Asked if being dumped was ‘ruthless’, he replied, “Ruthless is one way to put it.”

He added, “I ended up going back a few months later and doing an exit. They went, ‘we actually can’t have your character just disappear in a puff of smoke.’”
