The battling Brisbane Broncos have lost their eighth straight game, going down 28-16 to the Sharks at Lang Park.

Earlier, Valentine Holmes scored a late double, honouring Jai Arrow with his try celebrations, as the Dragons beat the Tigers 24-10 for just their second win of 2026.

And in the NRLW, the Canberra Raiders tasted victory over the Dragons in Simaima Taufa’s milestone 50th match, but the veteran skipper missed her celebratory conversion from right in front.

In the day’s first NRLW game, Tarryn Aiken returned as the Sydney Roosters took down the Titans in their first game of the 2026 season, while the women’s action wrapped up with reigning premiers Brisbane putting 50 on the Cowboys.

More of the same from Madge

Brisbane coach Michael Maguire is saying more of the same tonight as he has for the previous seven losses.

“I see the fight and effort. Again it wasn’t our night.”

But if the old saying of you either win or you learn is true …

“There’s a lot of our players learning. It’s giving us one hell of a foundation.”

And he’s asked if the team can go 8/8 to end the season to make the finals …

“Why not?

“I’ve got a lot of belief in the team, I’ve got a lot of belief in the group.”

We’re waiting for the press conferences

I’m sure it will be another illuminating chat with Michael Maguire.

Stand-in fullback Hayze Perham had a try and a blinding try assist on a tough night.

He says he’s not sure what’s going wrong with the team because the effort is absolutely there.

“We turn up with a smile and we f***in’ have a crack,” he tells ABC Sport.

“I couldn’t say [what’s wrong]. I think it’s obvious we come out here and have a real crack. The intensity’s there, the physicality’s there, sometimes the ball just doesn’t roll your way.”

But he backs the team in to stay alive in the season despite likely needing to win every one of their last eight games.

“We’re a team that can definitely f***ing get these eight wins in a row.”

And he makes sure to apologise for the sweary interview on his way out.

“I apologise for the language, brother.”

FULL-TIME: Cronulla wins 28-16 to hand Brisbane an eighth straight loss(Getty)

There are a lot of outs for the reigning premiers to be sure, but eight straight losses leaves the Broncos in all sorts now, with just eight games left in the season.

The Sharks, meanwhile, are up to fifth with nine wins.

They were far below their best tonight, but still did enough to get it done.

Five-eighth Braydon Trindall says they were a little too ill disciplined tonight.

About sums it up for the Broncos tonight and in 2026.

AND THERE GO THE SHARKS!

The Broncos spin it right and stand-in skipper Kotoni Staggs knocks on, Braydon Trindall swoops, scoops and scoots 65 metres to score watch is surely the game-sealing try.

76′ The Broncos get a piggyback penalty

A crusher tackle on Ben Talty gifts the Broncos some field position.

Here we go.

Well here come the Broncos

Perhaps riding high on his first try in three years, Hayze Perham fires a bullet of a cut-out ball to Deine Mariner to score out on the right wing.

Tom Duffy hooks the conversion, so the Broncos trail by a converted try.

72′ Broncos look clueless

They’ve been rushed on the last all night long, and here’s another one as Ben Hunt is under the pump and has to fling a ball away for Deine Mariner to snap a bomb away from the wing.

70′ Cronulla gives Brisbane a chance, but Trindall snuffs it out

Jayden Berrell gets involved after being in front of the play-the-ball, so the Broncos have a golden chance from 20 metres out.

But Braydon Trindall destroys Preston Riki with a rib-rattling tackle to knock the ball loose right on the tryline.

What a tackle.

The Broncos hit back

Tom Duffy rolls in the grubber and Hayze Perham flies through to win the contest with Teig Wilton for the ball and scores under the posts.

Is there life in the premiers yet?

Will Kennedy is in for the Sharks!

The set starts with a 50-metre kick return by Sione Katoa after a nothing kick by Ben Hunt.

And it ends with the Sharks running it on the last and Will Kennedy bursting through the tackle of Tom Duffy to score for Cronulla.

And surely that’s the end for the Broncos.

Sat 4 Jul 2026 at 8:56pm

58′ The Broncos get it back off the kick-off

It’s a wobbly one off the boot and Braydon Trindall tries to trap it on the boot, but his touch is about as soft as a diamond and the ball ricochets all the way to Josh Coric.

But again the attack is stagnant by the Broncos and Hayze Perham dies with the ball on the last.

Hat-trick for Sione Katoa

It’s oh so easy for the Sharks as they spin it right and Braydon Trindall floats a lovely ball out to his winger and he crosses for the third time tonight.

Sat 4 Jul 2026 at 8:50pm

52′ Another wasted shot by Brisbane

The Broncos go right at pace but the ball out in front of Hayze Perham is knocked on. Honestly, these can’t pull anything off at the moment.

And now Xavier Willison is down holding a shoulder. The Broncos really can’t afford to be missing him as well.

48′ Xavier Willison saves the day

Ben Hunt’s kick is too deep and Sione Katoa’s able to put a foot in the in-goal as he marks it.

He goes up for the quick tap and pass to a flying Nicho Hynes, but Xavier Willison just manages to knock the ball out of Hynes’s hands and knocks on. The Sharks keep the ball but Willison with a massive play.

Can the Broncos hold onto the ball in this half and get their first win in months?

Sat 4 Jul 2026 at 8:23pm

Sat 4 Jul 2026 at 8:23pm

HALF-TIME: Cronulla leading Brisbane 10-6

Well, I think the Broncos are very lucky to only be trailing by four points. They haven’t shown much of anything on either side of the ball so far tonight.

The Sharks need to tighten things up too with ball in hand. Although they could be up 16-6 if Nicho Hynes had potted all his goals. And Sione Katoa could have a hat-trick if not for a fumble.
