The three-time Olympian will be on the mic calling all the action when men’s and women’s teams loaded with the finest Indigenous talent in the country take on New Zealand’s Poitukohu Maori Aotearoa in a NAIDOC Week double-header at Cairns Basketball Association.
George, who recently announced she’d fallen pregnant, will commentate the games alongside former Cairns Taipans’ stalwart Alex Loughton and said the event held deep personal meaning.
“I’m married into an Indigenous family,” George, whose husband Kailou is a Torres Strait Islander, said.
“My daughter Pearl and baby to be are of Indigenous heritage and so I’ll do everything I can to make sure they’ve got an understanding of their identity and who they are and the history of Indigenous culture here in Australia.”
George said the games were bigger than basketball and pointed to the likes of Shaneice Swain, the McDowell-White siblings and Taryn Bond as examples of the depth of Indigenous talent in the sport.
“These games bring a level of platform,” she said.
“It’s really important that games like this happen, just to make sure the next generation of Indigenous kids can see, ‘Hey, I can do this too, I can be this too’.
“It also brings an element of celebrating culture, which I think is so incredibly important and special.”
