Cold weather will remain in parts of Australia on Thursday, with the evening expected to be particularly cold due to an ongoing high-pressure system.

Sky News senior meteorologist Rob Sharpe said a slow-moving high-pressure system is responsible for the colder nights and mornings.

“This very large high-pressure system has been slow-moving over the top,” Sharpe said.

“When you get high systems over top, that’s when you get clear skies, the light winds and the cold mornings,” Sharpe said.

Victoria is in for a particularly chilly Thursday, with partly cloudy skies and low temperatures.

Tasmania will be cold in the south and through the centre, while the north coast will be partly cloudy with a chance of a light shower.

Showers are expected across central New South Wales and along the northern coastline.

Showers are also forecast for Queensland’s eastern coastline, while areas further inland will remain generally dry apart from Birdsville, which has a chance of light rain.

The Northern Territory will experience mostly dry weather as the rain clears, although showers are developing in Alice Springs.

Sunny skies are expected across Western Australia, apart from the south-west corner, where showers are expected to develop in the afternoon.

A foot of snow is forecast to fall across the Alpine region.
