
After nearly nine years, Sony has finally given its RX10 bridge camera line a proper update, and the fifth-generation RX10 V pairs the familiar 20.1MP 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS sensor and ZEISS 24-600mm f/2.4-4.0 zoom with the AI-driven BIONZ XR processor from Sony’s latest Alpha bodies. The result is a single-body superzoom that adds Real-time Recognition AF, 30 fps blackout-free continuous stills, and up to 4K 120p video, all for a suggested price of $2,299.99.
The RX10 series has always occupied an unusual niche. It slots between pocketable compacts and interchangeable-lens systems, offering a large-for-the-category 1-inch sensor behind a long, bright fixed zoom. That combination made the RX10 IV a favorite among wildlife shooters, event photographers, and run-and-gun video journalists who wanted enormous reach without swapping glass. We first covered the line back with the original RX10, and when Sony went quiet after the RX10 IV in 2017, the category thinned out considerably, as we noted in our recent RX10 V teaser coverage. This new model is Sony’s answer to a segment that has had very few fresh options for years.
A familiar sensor with new brains behind it
At the core of the RX10 V is a 20.1-megapixel (approximately effective) 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor. On paper, this is the same class of chip that powered the RX10 IV, so the resolution and sensor size story remains unchanged. What is new is the processing: Sony has fitted the BIONZ XR engine, the same generation of processor found in recent Alpha cameras like the a7 V and a7R VI, complete with a dedicated AI processing unit.

Sony states that the new processor keeps noise low across the mid-to-high ISO range, holding accurate color and texture in skin tones, skies, and greenery. Twelve customizable Creative Look presets handle in-camera color, and the updated D-Range Optimizer now reaches up to Level 8 to balance highlights and shadows in strong backlight. As with any manufacturer image-quality claim, we would want to confirm real-world dynamic range and high-ISO behavior in our own testing before drawing conclusions, particularly since our a7 V lab test showed Sony’s stated figures sitting above measured video dynamic range.

The most consequential upgrade tied to the BIONZ XR processor is autofocus. The RX10 V gains Real-time Recognition AF, driven by the AI processing unit, which can identify and track people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes. An Auto mode attempts to detect the subject type on its own, and human pose estimation keeps focus locked on people even when they turn away or wear helmets and sunglasses. Touch tracking lets you tap a subject to initiate Real-time Tracking while you concentrate on framing.
The system covers a wide portion of the frame. Sony’s specification places focus performance alongside its Alpha cameras, and independent testing indicates the RX10 V uses 575 autofocus points spanning roughly 71% of the image area, with the full complement of area modes including multiple spot sizes, custom framing, and full-area AF. That is a meaningful jump from the RX10 IV’s 315-point, 65%-coverage phase-detection array. Whether the subject-recognition algorithms perform as reliably in cluttered, low-light wildlife scenarios as they do with cooperative subjects is exactly the kind of question our hands-on testing will need to answer.

For stills photographers chasing action, the headline number is 30 fps blackout-free continuous shooting with the electronic shutter, backed by up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second. A Continuous Shooting Speed Boost function can increase the burst rate mid-sequence. The stacked sensor’s fast readout also keeps rolling shutter in check, which matters for a camera aimed at birds in flight and fast sports, and applies to video capture as well.
There are trade-offs worth flagging for stills work. The 30 fps mode requires the electronic shutter and, if you want RAW at all, lossy RAW files. The camera also retains a mechanical leaf shutter, which enables high flash sync speeds but imposes an aperture constraint: at shutter speeds faster than 1/1000 second with the mechanical shutter, the aperture stops down to f/8. Reaching for faster speeds at wider apertures means switching to the electronic shutter, and there is no automatic hand-off between the two shutter types. One notable omission is Pre-Capture, the buffer-before-you-press feature present on Sony’s other BIONZ XR bodies, which would have been a natural fit for unpredictable wildlife.

Where the RX10 V looks strongest on paper is video. The camera records up to 4K 120p, including 4K slow motion at up to 5x, with 4:2:2 10-bit capture. Sony’s color science is well represented through S-Cinetone for a ready-to-use cinematic look and S-Log3 for maximum grading latitude, and you can import up to 16 user LUTs to monitor a graded look while recording in Log.
Active Mode stabilization steadies handheld footage, and AI subject recognition drives an Auto Framing function that keeps the subject centered during recording. The Multi Interface Shoe supports a digital audio signal with compatible microphones for cleaner sound, and USB Type-C handles 4K 30p live streaming as well as high-speed transfer. Time-lapse and still-image extraction with Shot Mark round out the feature set. For an all-in-one body with this much reach, that is a genuinely deep video specification.
Viewfinder, screen, and a much-needed battery upgrade
Handling sees some welcome refinement. The electronic viewfinder moves to a 0.5-type Quad-VGA OLED panel with approximately 3.68 million dots and 0.78x magnification, a clear step up from the RX10 IV’s smaller, lower-resolution unit. The rear 3.0-type LCD rises to approximately 1.62 million dots. Sony has borrowed the button layout and grip design from the Alpha mirrorless series, and an eight-direction multi-selector joystick makes selecting focus points far more intuitive.
Perhaps the most practical change is power. The RX10 V adopts the Z-series NP-FZ100 battery, rated for approximately 630 shots per charge (around 570 using the viewfinder), roughly 50% more than the previous model. That swap brings the camera onto the same widely available cell used across much of Sony’s modern lineup, a genuine convenience we explored in our camera battery compatibility guide. A dust- and moisture-resistant design, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Creators’ App connectivity for cloud transfer and remote control complete the package.

The RX10 V’s closest competition largely comes from within its own history. A used RX10 IV remains a viable option for anyone who simply wants the versatile 24-600mm formula, though the fifth-generation body, autofocus, and battery are clear improvements. For those who prioritize raw reach above all else, the Nikon COOLPIX P1100 offers a staggering 24-3000mm equivalent range at a lower price, but on a much smaller sensor. In terms of the balance between sensor size, zoom range, feature set, and video performance, the RX10 V currently has few genuine rivals, which is precisely why the segment has been waiting so long for it.
