A US official has said Washington DC is using diplomacy “for now” to calm tensions with Iran but vowed that could change if Tehran refuses to come back to the negotiating table.
The official, who has not been named, told CNN the US was deliberately striking targets in Iran and then pausing to avoid escalation to “let diplomacy work.”
It comes as chilling banners calling for the death of US President Donald Trump over the assassination of Iran’s former supreme leader were on full display during Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s multi-day burial ceremony.
Iran and the US have traded blows after the pair resumed hostilities in The Gulf.
Tehran targeted US bases not just on the Gulf coast but also further away in Jordan. It has accused the US of targeting a nuclear power station.
Meanwhile, reports have shed more light on why Mr Trump ditched the new Qatar donated super luxurious Air Force One when he left this week’s NATO summit in Turkey. He instead opted to fly on the older model he had shunned.
Mr Trump had said the new AF1 was going ahead of him to a base the US uses in the UK to show off the plane. But he also told reporters they were “on a dangerous plane” due to threats from Iran.
