NSW Police detective acting inspector Brenton Sommerville said earlier the cause of the man’s injuries was unknown.
“I’m very thankful to all of the members of the community this morning,” he said.
“It happened in the early hours of the morning where an elderly vulnerable member of the community was left on the roadside and their actions greatly assisted the police response.”
Police are appealing for anyone in the area of Orchardleigh Street between 4am and 4.40am with information or dashcam footage to call Crime Stoppers.
“All information that the public can provide will assist us with this investigation,” Sommerville said.
“This seems to be a remote and isolated incident, it’s not something that’s typical of the area.
“I would encourage members of the community to go about their activities as they normally would.
“We’re working very, very hard to bring the person responsible to justice as quickly as we can.”
Police have taken items from the scene further examination.
Sommerville said the man and his family were not known to police.
