With a minute left on the clock, Meaney broke the dead-lock in a cliffhanger finish, spinning out of a Keano Kini tackle to plant the ball down behind his head and clinch a thrilling 22-18 win for Storm at AAMI Park on Sunday night.

A do-or-die Storm had the game on their terms midway through the second half leading 18-6, but a Kini-inspired Titans threatened to pull off a miraculous comeback.

Kini levelled the scores on the back of two Titans tries in eight minutes and set the game up for a grandstand finish.

But there would be no dream finish for the Titans in AJ Brimson’s 150th NRL game as their gallant comeback fell short on the back of Meaney’s heroics.

It was a must-win game for Storm, who stayed within two wins of the top eight.

The desperation of halfback Jahrome Hughes was crucial for Storm.

Hughes pulled off two crucial try-saying lunges in the first half to keep Storm in the game when the Titans threatened in the opening 40.

The 31-year-old also had two try assists in an impressive return from injury.

A star was born with youngster Cooper Clarke hugely influential in the Storm forward pack with 125 run metres and 67 post contact metres, while Tyran Wishart filled the void left by the resting Origin star Cam Munster with aplomb.

BIG HITS

TITANS HARD DONE BY?

Given the four-point margin, the Titans may feel a touch unlucky after a contentious Storm try was awarded just before half time.

Jack Howarth crossed to give the Storm the lead but it looked as if the Storm centre may have been tackled before grounding the ball.

It was a decision that raised some eyebrows with Fox League’s Michael Ennis and Bryan Fletcher stating at half time that the wrong call was made.

“That was a double movement,” Fletcher said with Ennis adding: “The scores should be locked up.”

HOODOO CONTINUES

The Titans walked away proud of their efforts, particularly the stand out Kini, who showed he is a star on the rise in an enthralling fullback battle with Sua Fa’alogo, who was just as impressive for Storm, but remain without a win in Melbourne since 2014.

The Titans began the game with an air of confidence.

Titans forward Tino Fa’asuamaleaui produced a delicious offload for five-eighth Jayden Campbell to cross the line, only for it to be ruled forward, but it was a warning shot for what was to come from the visitors.

A dropped ball from Titans halfback Zane Harrison sapped the initial momentum before Storm forward Trent Loiero sparked his side with a big tackle that rattled Titans forward Mo Fotuaika.

Off the back of that big hit, an enterprising 60-metre run from five-eighth Wishart, was the impetus for Storm’s first try, which saw Hughes produce a superb high kick to the corner for Will Warbrick to score.

In an instant, the Titans regained their groove when hooker Oliver Pascoe connected with Fotuaika to level the score, which was the least they deserved, having dominated territory in the first 20 minutes.

Pascoe then produced a stunning individual effort, collecting his own grubber kick, but came up millimetres short as his ability to put the ball down was impeded by his own elbow before losing control and a desperate Hughes.

STORM CAPITALISE

The pain of coming up short for the Titans was compounded when the Storm took the lead moments later through Jack Howarth, who showed his strength to slam down in the middle of four Titans.

Brimson came close to a first half try on his big day, but was caught with a foot out of bounds before touching down after a try-saving lunge from Hughes, who was doing it at both ends for the Storm with his strong defence complimenting his dangerous kicking game to ensure the hosts held a 12-6 halftime advantage.

An accidental offside and a barnstorming run from Clarke had the Titans on the back foot early in the second half.

The Storm needed no second invitation when a crafty Hughes produced a no-look pass for Alec MacDonald to extend the lead to 12.

THRILLING FINISH

Just when it looked as though Storm was putting on the finishing touches on the game, captain Harry Grant threw a careless pass for Campbell to intercept and score on a 95-metre run.

The Titans tied the game through Kini, scoring straight from a scrum after a Warbrick knock on, which appeared to come off the fingers of Brimson first, but Storm inexplicably didn’t challenge the decision, before Meaney sealed the game.
