CAM Waters has not held back on the tendency for fuel churn usage to see Supercars races descend into a battle of conservation.
Waters’ last stint in the Sunday race of the Townsville 500 was blunted by an issue getting his Monster Mustang its full ration of fuel at its final pitstop. Walkinshaw TWG’s Ryan Wood likewise was forced to conserve rather than attack, taking the sting out of the closing laps.
Waters conceded that victory was out of the question, but is sure he could have challenged Matt Payne for second.
“I don’t think I would have got to Brodie (Kostecki), his middle stint was amazing, that really set up his race,” said the Tickford Racing ace.

“I probably reckon I could have got to the back of Matt, which would have been a pretty cool battle, but just obviously didn’t have enough fuel in the car and had to fuel-save.
“It’s just kind of the way it’s been with these fuel churns, it’s just all about saving fuel.
“It’s a pretty shit way to go racing.”
It was nevertheless another excellent outing for Waters, who suddenly has found himself on a six-race stretch featuring two wins, three poles and five podiums.

“Obviously it was great to get through Darwin and have a really good weekend with three strong results, but to come here to a very different circuit and have another three very good results, it was really good for our team,” said Waters.
“For us, it’s about looking at what happened today and learning from that and try to make those errors again.
“We’ll go to Perth and try to roll out a fast car there. Just take each race as it comes.”
