Cody Simpson has released a music video for his new single Fluent amid his battle with a dislocated knee and a vocal injury – and the irony is not lost on him.
While the song speaks to the themes of communication and body language, Simpson is unable to talk or walk, leaving Simpson, 29, struggling through several concepts before finding a way to shoot the music video.

Fluent marks Simpson’s third single of the year in his so-far triumphant return to music; however, fans began to fear it would all be put on pause when Simpson announced that, due to a vocal injury, he would be on vocal rest while awaiting surgery.
But eager not to disappoint, Simpson released Fluent, and after cycling through three different concepts for the music video as the health issues kept piling up, he landed on something “perfect”.
“We went through thick & thin to get this made so to have it out in the world feels as sweet as honey,” he wrote on Instagram.
“The irony of it coming out amidst what I’m going through is humorously divine! When my vocal cord injury and dislocated knee rendered me mute and unable to walk much Antony [Muse] & I found ourselves on our third concept for this video – an injured mime communicating through body language – perfect!
“Inspired by my love of theatre and art films and Charlie Chaplin and cabaret. I rocked up to set on crutches and we did this! Lots of ice on the knee that night. I hope you love it as much as we do!”
In a statement released to media, Simpson promised that his vocal injury wouldn’t stop him releasing music, adding how grateful he was to be able to “put the finishing touches on Fluent”.
He again addressed the irony of the situation, explaining that all he has right now is body language, albeit limited due to his knee injury.
Simpson first shared news of a haemorrhage on one of his vocal cords in May, admitting he had hoped to keep it private until discovering that the damage was worse than initially thought.
He confirmed that he was going to need surgery to resolve the issue, with a damaged blood vessel on the underside of his right vocal cord.

But his surgery was pushed back after dislocating his knee during rehearsals for a music video.
Simpson shared an image of himself on crutches alongside a clip showing the moment the dislocation happened.
“The universe is serving it to me this year!” He wrote on Instagram.
“I can’t walk or talk for some time now, and no singing or dancing for months to come. But that won’t stop me. I’m still creating. The album and live shows have to wait, but I’ve got some work to share while I’m down for the count. Thanks for understanding. I’ll be back stronger ❤️
