Akin to choosing a favourite child, Kaiko concedes that if he were to pick just one, it would be the library; a sun-drenched space that oozes warmth. “It was partly inspired by Olafur Eliasson’s Room for One Colour, the 1997 installation in which monofrequency lamps collapse an entire room into a single perceptual field, stripping away everything except one hue,” Kaiko recalls. “That work appeared in Australia at the MCA in 2010 and stayed with me. What Eliasson achieves with light, we tried to do with surface and material.” Swathed in amber-gold tones, lacquered joinery blends with woven grasscloth on the walls and ceiling; a brown leather office chair from Space Furniture atop a tactile custom rug by Kaiko Design Interiors, all topped off with the retro-adjacent amber cathedral glass panels on the French doors, “all reading the same colour but each surface reflecting light differently as the room changes throughout the day.” “There’s also a beautiful aural quality to the space,” Kaiko continues. “Grasscloth on every wall and the ceiling deadens the sound in a way that makes it feel genuinely private in such a prominent part of the home. It’s the room that most purely captures what we were trying to do across the whole house: intense, considered and completely resolved.”
