Football Australia has launched a probe under its national code of conduct after a player was accused of betting on a game he was involved in.

According to the Newcastle Herald, the investigation surrounds a match in the National Premier League Northern NSW competition.

A Charlestown Azzuri player is alleged to have placed a bet on a round 17 match against Belmont Swansea on June 27. Belmont Swansea won the match 3-1.

The men’s and women’s National Premier Leagues are second-tier competitions underneath the A-Leagues. There are several regional competitions beneath that.

The Northern NSW competition covers Newcastle and the Hunter region. Charlestown is just south of Newcastle.

Despite the relatively low-level of the competition, fans can bet on NPL Northern NSW matches through several wagering sites.

Football Australia has been contacted for comment. Nine.com.au is not suggesting the player was involved in any match-fixing.

Under the FA’s code of conduct, registered players – as well as coaches and officials – cannot bet on any match sanctioned by the FA or state governing body.

The Newcastle Herald reported the club was aware of the investigation, but would not comment further.

It’s not the first time Australian football has been involved in a betting scandal.

Only last year, a former A-League captain admitted in court he deliberately earned yellow cards in a 2023 A-League match.

Then-Macarthur Bulls captain Ulises Davila and two teammates, which he paid $10,000 each, deliberately earned yellow cards in a match against Sydney FC in December 2023.

Bets had been placed on the team earning at least four yellows, and payouts totalled more than $200,000.

Eight other charges against Davila were dropped.

Last week, a Queensland man was also convicted of a failed attempt to fix another NPL match.

Alexandro Azzinnaro, 56, asked Gold Coast United goalkeeper Carlos Saliadarre to concede goals in an upcoming match. Saliadarre declined and reported the offer to the club, which alerted authorities.

A second man will appear in court over the same matter on October 1.
