TPG-owned internet provider iiNet today announced that it has been impacted by a cyber incident compromising its order management system.

Based on its current evidence, iiNet says a third party obtained a list of 280,000 active iiNet email addresses, 20,000 active iiNet landline phone numbers, and an undisclosed number of inactive email addresses and numbers. In addition, around 10,000 iiNet usernames, street addresses, and phone numbers were accessed, plus 1,700 modem setup passwords.

iiNet says the system accessed has limited personal information, and does not contain details like passports, driver’s licenses, credit cards, or any banking information.

The telco is making contact with impacted customers to provide support and guidance on what to do next. iiNet urges all customers to be especially vigilant around suspicious communications received via email, text or phone call. It also recommends resetting the password for any online accounts that use the same password as the customer uses for their iiNet account.

iiNet says that the system involved may contained histrorical customer records, so some past customers may also be affected.

In addition, iINet has set up a dedicated hotline that customers call with concerns. The number is 1300 861 036, and it is open between 8.30am and 8pm on weekdays, and between 9am and 5pm on weekends.

Consumer advocacy group Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) weighed in on the breach, with CEO Carol Bennett commending the telco for its quick response.

“Affected customers should remain alert and take steps to safeguard their personal information,” said Bennett. “Support is also available from IDCARE, Australia’s national identity and cyber support service, which can provide tailored advice to those who may be at risk.”
