Former world No.3 Maciej Janowski has the chance to regain his spot on the FIM Speedway Grand Prix stage after being given a call-up for the FIM SGP Challenge in Terenzano on July 25.
The eight-time Speedway GP winner just missed out on reaching the Challenge at his qualifier in Glasgow on May 30, when he was beaten by Denmark’s Frederik Jakobsen and home hero Chris Harris in a run-off for the final two qualification places.
But with Australian champion Jack Holder forced to withdraw from the Challenge due to injury, Janowski has been handed a spot in Italy, where the top four riders are guaranteed places in the 2027 Speedway GP series.
Janowski secured SGP qualification for the first time in his career when the FIM SGP Challenge last came to Italy. He finished fourth in Lonigo in 2014.
While only the top three were due to qualify, winner Matej Zagar finished in the Speedway GP automatic qualification places, meaning the SGP spot he earned at the Challenge passed to Janowski.
Current Speedway GP riders Robert Lambert, Andzejs Lebedevs, Kacper Woryna, Dominik Kubera and Michael Jepsen Jensen all defend their spots in the series at the FIM SGP Challenge.
Alongside Janowski, former SGP regulars Kai Huckenbeck, Kim Nilsson and Chris Harris all hope to regain their spots at the sport’s top table.
Meanwhile Luke Becker, Rohan Tungate, Keynan Rew, Jaimon Lidsey, Anders Rowe, Frederik Jakobsen and Italian hero Paco Castagna bid to qualify for the first time.
