Jon Rahm was given a code-of-conduct warning after throwing his club following an errant tee shot in the second round at the Open Championship.

Rahm, who finished the day four shots off the lead, sent his tee shot to the left of the green on the 15th hole and subsequently flung his iron into the air in frustration.

The Spaniard, who is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, was given an official warning and will now incur a two-shot penalty should he be involved in another incident this tournament.

He risks disqualification with a third violation.

Although when speaking to reporters after the day’s play, Rahm hit back at suggestions that it is anything to worry about.

“I shouldn’t have acted that way but… I mean, you guys are acting like it’s every single hole. I had a moment,” Rahm responded when asked if he could control the outbursts through the rest of the tournament.

“I’m definitely more intense and ​passionate than a lot of the players out ​here, especially ⁠at work. But I wasn’t thinking about it. It’s not like I’m going to — if I try to alter who I ⁠am ​too much, it might cost me ​a little bit on the course.

“But certainly shouldn’t have moments like the one ​on 15; I get it.”

A journalist then replied by reminding Rahm that “if it happens again” he will cop a two-stroke penalty.

“That’s pretty severe,” the journalist added, to which Rahm simply reiterated “if it happens”.

Rahm also took issue with one reporter describing him as an “emotional” player, explaining that he was simply taking his frustration out on a “bad shot” and nothing more.

“Actually on the tee it was beautiful, left-to-right wind, perfect distance for a 6-iron for me, aim at the left bunker and just make a driving range swing that I’ve made hundreds of thousands of times, and it was just such a bad miss, honestly,” he added.

“Trying to hit a fade and draw it — I had a few pulled missed left shots. 14, I played it almost like I did yesterday, right? I think the unexpected, how unexpected that shot was, and shouldn’t have reacted that way, but I did.”

It capped off a tense press conference between Rahm and reporters, beginning right at the top when he was asked if he received any information from officials on the warning.

Rahm: Nothing after the round.

Question: During the round?

Rahm: Yeah. Well, you guys are asking. You know the answer.

Question: I don’t know the answer.

Rahm: I got warned.
