England’s World Cup winning football captain Bobby Moore, centre, was cleared of stealing an emerald bracelet in Colombia on August 20, 1970.

Moore had been accused of stealing the $3000 jewellery piece from a shop in Bogota while part of the visiting England team. But after being detained for three days, police said he was free to leave Colombia.

It later emerged Moore had been the victim of a frame-up. The plan was to either blackmail the world famous footballer, or even damage the England team’s morale in the lead-up to the 1972 World Cup held in Mexico.
