ORCIÈRES-MERLETTE, France — As the Tour de France enters its immense triptych of mountain stages to decide the yellow jersey, Tadej Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad is on the ropes.
On Wednesday, everyone watched key climbing domestique Adam Yates almost come to a stop and he later admitted to vomiting on the bike as he crawled over the line 26 minutes down.
The Brit had been suffering from what the team called gastroenteritis for days at this point, and had teammate Tim Wellens for company at the finish line in Voiron.
“Adam is not so healthy and I don’t feel so well myself either,” Wellens told Sporza. “I have a sore throat, mucus, and I’m not feeling great. But more than half of our team is still in top form.” That assessment might be optimistic.
