LeBron James has spent more than 20 years controlling the NBA’s spotlight. From “The Decision” in 2010, returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, or taking his talents to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, every major career move has changed the league.
This offseason feels a little different.
The uncertainty has created ripple effects throughout the league, with teams, the NBA schedule, and even public perception all left waiting. In terms of how James is viewed on the all-time rankings, this could slightly alter how this final chapter of his career is remembered.
The Drama Is Beginning To Overshadow “The Decision 2.0”
LeBron has always understood the power of controlling the narrative. He and his team have done it better than almost every athlete in American sports.
Every major LeBron James announcement has dominated the sports world. But there’s a difference between commanding attention and allowing uncertainty to drag on.
The Miami Heat, arguably the frontrunner for James, is experiencing the effects of this drama by accidentally leaking the LeBron James introductory press conference and having to clarify it almost instantly.
Across the league, NBA players are doing their best to recruit The King. Even LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards are doing their best to bring the veteran to join their party in Minnesota.
LeBron’s own son, Bronny, admitted that a Warriors superteam would be something “crazy” to witness.
So many teams, so many reports and drama around them.
Every NBA superstar has had the power to control the season’s storyline, but LeBron seems to enjoy dragging out processes longer than anyone else.
This offseason is essentially a slower version of The Decision, one of the most criticized moments of LeBron’s career.
Unlike his moves to Miami, Cleveland, or Los Angeles, which were finalized relatively quickly once free agency opened, this process has become an ongoing storyline. And it doesn’t seem to go away.
Fair or not, indecision can create fatigue. For a player who turns 42 years old next season, he is the first to show indecisiveness so late in his career.
The NBA Is Waiting
LeBron’s decision affects the entire league. Every elite superstar has that same power, except none of them became unrestricted free agents at any point in their careers.
Michael Jordan knew he was too important to do so. Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, and even Stephen Curry were never restricted free agents. That would be too much drama for them to engage in.
LeBron James understands the NBA is waiting but is fine to remind everyone who holds the cards at the moment. Does he need to rub it in, unlike the greats before him?
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently acknowledged that the uncertainty has complicated scheduling for major events such as Opening Night, Christmas Day, and nationally televised games:
In a recent chat on ‘Game Plan,’ he admitted the league is waiting for him to make a decision.
“I would like him to make his announcement already, so we can finish the schedule,” said Silver. “Because as you might imagine, the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in the schedule. But it will influence how we set the schedule, how we set opening week, Christmas Day, etc.”
The league naturally wants its biggest star featured in its biggest windows, but finalizing those plans becomes difficult until LeBron’s future is known.
Now, reports have come out that James was irritated by Silver’s comments, which has probably pushed back the “Decision 2.0” even more, according to Andy Baskin:
“Here’s what I was told yesterday by a reliable source,” said Baskin. “Last week, LeBron’s crew was probably ready to make an announcement. ‘Irritated’ was the word I was told by the commissioner pushing them…so they decided to hold back.”
That’s an incredible amount of influence for a player entering his 24th NBA season. While it speaks to LeBron’s star power, it also illustrates how he enjoys making it known how much power he has.
Several Contenders Can’t Fully Move Forward
LeBron’s decision also impacts how NBA contenders are preparing for the new season.
The Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Minnesota Timberwolves must continue evaluating different scenarios while waiting for clarity. Each of these teams is in the running for James, but they don’t know how to proceed accordingly.
The Warriors, for one, are somehow tying Stephen Curry’s final years to what LeBron wants to do. That has led to widespread criticism from credible media members. Nick Wright of Fox Sports highlighted this:
“All right, so the Warriors, which at one point in time, I think I said I wanted, I didn’t want him to go there, then I did want him to go there. If they had been able to swing a trade for Anthony Davis, then it makes a little more sense,” said Wright as he began speaking about the Warriors as a potential landing spot for James.
“As presently constituted, if they were to add LeBron James, they would obviously be a team that you would hate to play in a series. But also a team with Kristaps and Steph coming off an injury-riddled season and Horford at 40 and Jimmy Butler coming off an ACL and Draymond at, I think, 36. And LeBron at 42, that it would be very difficult to see how they can win four straight series.”
Even organizations not directly involved are waiting because James’ decision could trigger a domino effect across the league. Where do James Harden and DeMar DeRozan go next? Even marquee role players such as Bruce Brown are waiting to see where he belongs.
Even the futures of Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving are in question as it pertains to what LeBron wants to do.
The longer the “Indecision” continues, the more difficult it becomes for teams to execute their own offseason plans.
Player Empowerment At Its Finest
LeBron created the player empowerment era. He should take responsibility for this, good and bad. And it led to someone like Kevin Durant taking it to another level.
James consistently made bold decisions that prioritized his career, showing no fear of leaving franchises high and dry time and time again. This time, however, the motivation is different.
According to longtime agent Rich Paul, this is about choosing what’s best for LeBron personally as he approaches the end of one of the greatest careers in sports history.
That means James might even accept a $48M pay cut if it means doing what makes him most happy at the moment. According to Shams Charania:
“The teams, Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Philadelphia, Minnesota, they’re set. Those are the teams. Wherever he ends up, I mean, you’re looking at minimum deals, you’re looking at exceptions. The contracts are not going to be the grand part of this deal.”
“LeBron James was very clear from the very beginning. This is going to be based on happiness in terms of chance to contend for a championship, a chance to compete at a high level, join a culture that doesn’t come from going to a team and then gutting that team from multiple different players”.
After everything he’s accomplished, LeBron has earned the right to make a decision entirely on his own terms.
Still, it once again makes it clear that James has created and led the “Player Empowerment Era” that many superstars before him never opted to undertake.
LeBron’s Resume Is Intact, But Legacy Might Look Different
LeBron James’ resume is set in stone, but his legacy unfortunately isn’t.
Four championships, four MVPs, the NBA’s all-time scoring record, and more than two decades of sustained greatness ensure his place among the greatest players ever regardless of what happens next.
However, legacies are also shaped by how careers end.
Michael Jordan essentially ended his peak with the “Last Dance”, and his Washington Wizards stint was nothing more than an old man giving NBA fans some favors before Kobe Bryant took over. Kobe ended with a historic 60-point performance after being a 5-time champion.
If the Indecision stretches much longer, fans might remember LeBron for being the ultimate drama-seeker. Uncertainty and fatigue shouldn’t be the feeling around the NBA at this point.
As unfair as it might sound, the greatest players are often remembered for how they exit the stage. LeBron needs to make sure the sports world, young and old, doesn’t start thinking twice about his legacy at this point.
