Sunday’s pay per view blockbuster has been thrown into absolute chaos after American co-main event fighter Stephen Fulton missed weight by a ludicrous six pounds on Saturday morning.
Fulton tipped the scales at the official weigh ins at 139.5 pounds – a ludicrous nine pounds over the super-featherweight limit, and still six pounds over the catchweight limit both fighters agreed upon on Friday.
Fulton requested a late-notice weight change after saying he “would have died” making the initial super-featherweight limit.
The change-up meant the bout was no longer a WBA world title eliminator, with Wilson’s camp agreeing to the weight change to keep the fight together as Sunday’s co-main event.
Those plans have now gone up in smoke
“It’s disgraceful,” a No Limit spokesman said. “Fulton is the most unprofessional boxer we have ever dealt with in 10 years.
“We already made allowances for him because the fight was at 130 pounds, and we agreed to go up to 133.
“But to come in at 139 is a joke.
“Liam Wilson still wants to take this fight because he is such a warrior, but six pounds over is unacceptable.”
Despite Wilson’s willingness to step into the ring at the higher weight, his team is playing it safe.
“I have a responsibility to look after Liam and his family,” Wilson’s coach, Ben Harrington said. “He’s almost 140 pounds, it’s supposed to be 133.
“He had no intention of making weight.
“No effort made at all. What a let down.
“We have to work out what to do.”
Wilson’s manager, Glen Jennings was furious.
“This feels like an absolute stitch up,” he said. “We sign a contract at 130, there’s an expectation you will deliver.
“It’s totally unacceptable and a blight on the sport.
“This is unprofessional. There’s nowhere to go for this bloke now.”
At the time of writing, Fulton still had time to drop some weight and make the fight happen, although that looks unlikely.
There have been discussions about adding a late-notice heavyweight fight to the undercard in its place.
If it gets taken off the card, it is the second co-main event fight to be scrapped in the space of just seven days after Jermall Charlo was denied a visa.
Charlo was scheduled to fight Koen Mazoudier, who is now hoping to return on next month’s Nikita Tszyu vs Ben Mahoney card.
