TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – A special art tour and tribute event took place Saturday in downtown Terre Haute, exploring the city’s history through local sculptor Bill Wolfe’s downtown statues.
The event began at the Vigo County Public Library before moving to six downtown sculptures, including the police statues outside of the Terre Haute Police Department. July marks the anniversaries of the deaths of Officer Brent Long and Detective Gregory Ferency. Part of the tour honored their lives and sacrifice.
Statues and the sculpting process
Participants learned about the process behind the creation of each statue, including the 15-foot Larry Bird statue outside of the Hulman Center.
The tour was led by Terre Haute historian Dr. Crystal Reynolds, with sculptor Bill Wolfe appearing as a special guest.
City history and summer reading
“Terre Haute and Vigo County have an amazing history, a history of quality, diversity and compassion, and Bill’s artwork, when he sculpts these amazing figures, it embodies this amazing Terre Haute,” Reynolds said.
The event also tied into the Vigo County Public Library’s summer reading theme, “Unearth a Story.”
