Jacinta Allan has taken the extraordinary step of pre-emptively nominating as a leadership candidate in the event of a spill.

Allan wrote to Victorian Labor state secretary Steve Staikos declaring she will contest the leadership even if a spill motion is successful, and has asked the party to make preparations for an election.

The premier’s leadership is on the brink. Factional conveners met last night and decided she no longer had the support of caucus.

“I am writing to request that you ensure Victorian Labor is prepared to conduct an election for the leadership of the State Parliamentary Labor Party in the event an election is required,” she said in a copy of that letter seen by The Age.

“I also wish to formally notify you of my intention to be a candidate for the leadership of the State Parliamentary Labor Party, in the event that an election is required.”

A Victorian Labor spokesperson said they would not be making any public comments.

The letter came as an MP confirmed to The Age that a delegation of cross-factional ministers and MPs have gone to see the premier to let her know that she has lost the majority of support in caucus and urged her to stand down.
