Cheek Media founder Hannah Ferguson has announced she will run as an independent candidate against Anthony Albanese in his own seat of Grayndler at the next federal
Ms Ferguson took to Instagram to announce the political move – saying it was “time for change” while acknowledging Mr Albanese had held the seat since before she was
“I believe we deserve better representation,” she wrote on the platform.
“I’m not here to play politics, that is just another reason Australians are fed up with the political party machinery.”
“My intention is to keep running local events, keep listening to feedback and to keep learning from my community.”
The 28-year-old took the opportunity to clarify her future role in Cheek Media, saying she wants it “to exist beyond” her.
“It is already challenging to navigate political candidacy with this small business that I have grown for the last six years,” she said.
“It is my intention to step away from the business at some stage next year to campaign full-time.”
The post amassed hundreds of comments and thousands of likes in the hours after it was uploaded, with many sharing their support as Grayndler voters.
Ms Ferguson shared her connection with her home seat and explained the decision to pivot from her previous choice to run as an independent for Senate.
In 2025, Mr Albanese won more than 66 per cent of votes in the two candidate preference, with Greens candidate Hannah Thomas amassing just over 33 per cent.
