FREO ASSISTANT ON BOMBERS, BLUES SHORTLIST

Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham is on both Essendon and Carlton’s shortlist to become their next senior coach.

Nine’s Damian Barrett reports Graham is among the finalists for the Essendon gig after he was last week also short-listed for the Carlton role.

Barrett revealed James Hird, Mark McVeigh, Murray Davis, Troy Chaplin and Daniel Pratt were others the Bombers expressed interest in, while there’s an “unknown” around caretaker coach Dean Solomon.

But Barrett couldn’t confirm which of those names had joined Graham in making it through to the next phase.

Chief Herald Sun reporter Jay Clark revealed over the weekend that ex-Bomber and Swans assistant McVeigh, who was GWS’ caretaker coach in 2022, is a legit contender.

“Essendon is looking at Mark McVeigh, I feel like he’s really firm in this race,” Clark said on Fox Footy.

“A lot’s been said about James Hird and Dean Solomon. But I think McVeigh is someone we really need to watch there.”

DETAILS ON HILL’S CONTRACT SETTLEMENT

Collingwood’s contract settlement with Bobby Hill will reportedly only see the Norm Smith medallist paid out for this year’s deal.

The Magpies and Hill’s management last week began talks over the 26-year old’s exit from the club.

That’s despite the small forward being contracted until 2030 on a five-year deal signed last year worth around $750,000 annually.

But according to veteran journalist Caroline Wilson, Hill’s money won’t be in the Pies’ salary cap beyond this year.

“(Collingwood CEO) Craig Kelly and the team, although they are very cognisant of looking after Bobby Hill’s welfare, were adamant they were not going to pay Bobby Hill beyond this year,” Wilson said on Seven.

“So, the settlement will only involve this year and the rest of this year’s contract.”

Hill has been absent from Collingwood HQ in recent times and made sporadic appearances at the club over the last 12 months while dealing with personal issues.

He hasn’t played an AFL game since Round 21 last year.

MCRAE ‘HOT FAVOURITE’ TO BE SA ORIGIN COACH

Collingwood boss Craig McRae is the “hot favourite” to be coach of South Australia in State of Origin.

That’s according to Seven’s Mitch Cleary ahead of SA’s return to the Origin stage next year.

If McRae were appointed, the Glenelg product would lead SA in its first Origin match since 1999 in a game he played in against Victoria.

It comes after Crows great Mark Ricciuto was unveiled as the SA chairman of selectors.

The AFL on Monday rolled out its three-year plan to continue State of Origin, with SA to play Western Australia in Perth next year.
