Crows defender Isaac Cumming says the team “just want (their) fans to be respectful” in the wake of supporters’ controversial booing of Isaac Quaynor in their round 20 clash against Collingwood.
Quaynor was the victim of Izak Rankine’s homophobic slur when the teams last met in August last season that led to a four-game ban for the Crows midfielder.
Rankine was forced to sit out of both the Crows’ finals appearances in a disastrous campaign in which they crashed out in straight sets.
When the teams faced off again at Adelaide Oval on Thursday evening, Quaynor copped boos from various sections of the crowd whenever he got near the football.
Cumming was asked about crowd’s behaviour on Monday.
“Personally, if I’m at the footy, I’m not going to boo – that’s just my personal opinion,” he said.
“But we do definitely just want our fans to be respectful.
“We’re lucky enough to have the best fans in the league, and 50,000 there – they’re all so passionate, they love this club.”
“But however, we do sort of encourage them to support us and footy respectively.”
Cumming maintained that he didn’t think the behaviour had an effect on the result.
“No, I don’t think the booing took effect on the result. Obviously, there’s been a lot of chat around it, so most of the chat’s been around that,” he said.
“But like I said, we love how our supporters are passionate and we love what they give us.
“But yeah, we just sort of need to be a bit more respectful at times.”
