Tucked away in Aspen, high above the Roaring Fork Valley, sits a striking retreat designed by the late postmodernist architect Robert A.M. Stern. Renowned for legendary luxury Manhattan towers like 15 Central Park West and 220 Central Park South, Stern plotted the sprawling home across 3.5 acres running crosswise along a raw rock face on Red Mountain—an exclusive enclave nicknamed “Billionaire Mountain” due to its clutch of ultra-wealthy residents ranging from media mogul Byron Allen to Walmart heiress Ann Walton Kroenke.
One of only three Stern-designed homes built in the Rocky Mountain resort town, the tawny-beige stucco and wood-trimmed structure hovers atop a native red sandstone base. A curving wall of glass fills the classically elegant interiors with natural light while framing views of Independence Pass and Mount Sopris over the Elk Mountain range.

Commissioned by Frederic “Rick” Bourke, cofounder of accessories and leather-goods brand Dooney & Bourke, the house was completed in the early 1990s. Per The Wall Street Journal, he and his wife, former ski racer Megan Bourke, have historically split their time between Aspen and Maine, where they own another Stern-designed home in Seal Harbor. However, after a bad spell of Covid-19 a few years ago, Rick now struggles with Aspen’s elevation, so the couple have decided to part with the custom estate for $70 million. Emery Holton of Saslove & Warwick of Douglas Elliman hold the listing.
Spanning roughly 10,600 square feet, the palatial pad offers seven bedrooms, 10 full bathrooms, and two powder rooms. Grand rooms on three levels are defined by soaring wood-beam ceilings and detailed millwork, while expansive stone terraces outside anchor an oversized heated swimming pool.

A towering wood door leads into a soaring entry foyer, where a sweeping corridor branches off into the public entertaining and private sleeping wings. Standing out is a fireside living room, which connects to a wet bar and a step-down billiards room. Other highlights include a formal dining room; an eat-in kitchen; a morning room; and a lower-level fitness area with an inground hot tub. The private quarters, meanwhile, feature a primary suite with a travertine-clad bath. Rounding it all off is an attached three-car garage, plus an annual $3,983 association fee covering essential subdivision management.
Bourke’s onetime Red Mountain neighbor was businessman Viktor Kozeny, according to WSJ. In 2009, Bourke was convicted of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for engaging in a scheme with Kozeny to bribe Azerbaijan government officials, spending a year and one day in prison starting in 2013. The couple is ready for a complete change in scenery, eying winters in Hawaii.
