Our favourite Colin From Accounts stars have celebrated the third and final season of the hit comedy with a star-studded gathering in Sydney Brewery, Rozelle.
Leading the way were the stars and co-creators of the BINGE Original Series, Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, who told news.com.au on the yellow carpet that while it’s “bittersweet” to see the series come to an end, they are excited to give fans one last laugh.
“It’s more sweet than bitter though, because to be able to hand it over to the audience who it was intended for is the best feeling,” Brammall told us of the final season.
“We’ve been living with it for so long and we love it. We love this world. We love the characters. But it’s for you guys, it’s for you guys to enjoy. So we hope you do.”
There may be plenty of laughs and hilarious antics to come in Season 3, which premiered on BINGE overnight, but behind the scenes Dyer said she went through a rollercoaster of emotions.
Stream Colin From Accounts now on BINGE, available on Hubbl.
“So many tears. And the last day on set though, maybe somewhat geniusly was very hard. We shot about 12 pages – we normally shoot seven or six. It was a big day,” she recalled. “We were on a stage in a car. It’s just like it was very repetitive and hard. And in its kind of brutality, it was like, ‘Oh yeah, this is helping us not miss this job.’”
“But there are other days on set that are a lot softer, but I was still very, very sad. But that day was a tough day. The last day was tough, not because it was the last day, but because it was a big day.”
Added Brammall: “There were some tears, but appropriate. An appropriate amount of tears.”
However, the creative couple, who are married in real life, have given fans a lifeline as they teased that another project is on the horizon because they love being on set so much.
“It’s a camaraderie that you build up,” Brammall said of bringing a project from page to screen. “It’s the family that you build up making it, and that’s what I’ll miss the most.”
“So we’re going to make something else. I don’t know what it is, but it’ll happen and we’ll build a new family.”
Added Dyer: “It’s the Carny life. We’re carnival people, so we just have to keep moving.”
Colin From Accounts follows brewery owner Gordon (Brammall) and medical student Ashley (Dyer) after their paths collide when she flashes her nipple at him while he’s driving. As a result he hits a stray dog, who they later adopt together and call Colin.
The duo end up as dog parents living together in Season 2, but their relationship is truly tested in Season 3, which deals with the aftermath of Gordon’s ill-fated proposal to Ash.
The Sydney premiere was attended by the rest of the Colin From Account cast, including Emma Harvie, Genevieve Hegney, Tai Hara, Michael Logo, Helen Thomson, Darren Gilshenan, Virginia Gay and Celeste Barber, who were also riding a wave of emotions with the series coming to an end.
“It’s been honestly the greatest season of television I’ve ever shot,” said Hegney, who plays Gordon’s close friend and brewery business partner Chiara.
“And that’s been so heartening and amazing. That’s why at the end it was extra sad because you very rarely get to play a character as great as this and with people that are your actual friends, who you love working with every day.”
“I think it’s the cherry on top,” Hara, who plays Ash’s ex-boyfriend, said of Season 3. “It’s like [Brammall and Dyer] have really outdone themselves this season. It’s the perfect way for everything to be wrapped up. And we’re just really grateful that we’ve got to do three seasons and with such beautiful, hilarious people.”
It was earlier this month that Brammall and Dyer announced the series would end, telling fans in a social media video that the decision was made because creatively it felt like the right time to call it quits to save themselves from having to “flog a dead horse”.
But as it turns out, the creative duo had always intended for Colin For Accounts to run for three seasons – and the cast were told of this from the start.
“Harry and Patty were pretty upfront that this was probably going to be the last one,” Harvie, who plays Ash’s best friend Meggles, shared on the yellow carpet. “But I think good on them for calling it when they feel that the timing’s right.”
“But who knows? Maybe in 10 years, we’ll go Colin From Accounts 10 years later. I reckon I’m holding out for that.”
