LeBron James’ move to the Philadelphia 76ers could see the four-time NBA champion return to a familiar role, with ESPN’s Shams Charania revealing the veteran is expected to spend significant time at point guard during the 2026-27 season.

After officially signing a two-year deal with Philadelphia on Monday, James is set to become the primary initiator in Nick Nurse’s offence, allowing the Sixers to maximise the scoring talents of Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid and rookie VJ Edgecombe.

“The Sixers, I’m told, are expecting LeBron James to play a good amount of time and period of time at the point guard position, on offence, initiating the game, the offence, for Nick Nurse,” Charania said

“Tyrese Maxey, last season, played a lot on the ball at point guard, and we know his prowess off the ball as a scorer. Think of a better player that can set the table for Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe. There’s all these players that can score, that can get the ball from LeBron James.”

Although James has spent much of his career playing as a forward, few players in NBA history have possessed his playmaking ability. He currently sits fourth on the league’s all-time assists list and proved during the 2019-20 season that he can thrive as a full-time point guard, leading the NBA with 10.2 assists per game.

The 41-year-old has also averaged more than seven assists per game in each of the past three seasons, making the move a logical fit for a Philadelphia team loaded with scoring options.

Having James initiate the offence would also allow Brown to attack the basket as a cutter, keep Embiid operating in the paint and free Maxey to play more frequently off the ball, where his speed and shooting become even greater weapons.

Exactly how Nurse structures his starting line-up remains to be seen.

One option would see James at point guard alongside Maxey, Brown, Dean Wade and Embiid, while another could move Brown to power forward and insert Edgecombe into the starting five.

Regardless of the combinations Philadelphia uses, the addition of James has elevated the 76ers into the conversation as one of the favourites to contend for the NBA championship.

76ers managing owner Josh Harris said he was “thrilled” about the chances of the team winning their first title since 1983.

“I am thrilled to welcome LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers,” ownership managing partner Harris said in a statement.

“One of the greatest players in NBA history and one of the best athletes ever, his accomplishments are iconic.” James, the NBA’s all-time scoring leader set to begin his record 24th campaign in October, is a four-time NBA champion and four-time NBA Most Valuable Player.

After winning two titles with Miami, another with hometown club Cleveland and his most recent with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, James could become the first NBA player to win crowns with four different teams.

James, a three-time Olympic champion and 22-time NBA All-Star, joins a Sixers roster filled with NBA stars in hopes of bringing Philadelphia an NBA title for the first time since Julius Erving led the club to the crown 43 years ago.

“I cannot wait to see LeBron alongside Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and our talented roster as we work to deliver a championship for Philly,” Harris said.

“To LeBron and his family: we are grateful you chose the 76ers, and look forward to this next chapter of your legendary career. Welcome to the 76ers!”

James’ arrival could also bring an unconventional commute.

According to multiple reports, the NBA’s first active billionaire is considering living in New York while playing for the 76ers, travelling to practices and games in Philadelphia by helicopter.

The possibility was first reported by several basketball insiders on X, with Charania adding that the flexibility to live in New York while commuting by helicopter was among the factors that appealed to James during his free agency decision.

James has not publicly confirmed where he intends to live during the season, but if the plan comes to fruition, it would add another unique chapter to one of the most remarkable careers in NBA history.
