A pedestrian is fighting for life after being caught in a horrific crash while waiting for a bus on the Gold Coast.

The man, 42, was waiting for the bus on Township Dr in Burleigh Heads about 4.50pm on Monday.

As he stood there, the arriving bus crashed into the shelter, causing the brick structure and roof to collapse on top of him.

Paramedics rushed to the scene where they treated the man for a significant injury to his arm.

He was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition.

Police said no other people, including the 57-year-old male driver of the bus, were physically injured in the crash.

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any vision of the incident is asked to contact police.
