A Chinese man will face court after allegedly trying to bribe a public official with $20,000 hidden inside a bag of tea.

It is alleged the man, 39, set up a business meeting with a Commonwealth official in Camp Hill, an inner city suburb of Brisbane, on July 9.

Police claim during the meeting, the man handed the official a bag of tea.

However, the official later allegedly found $20,000 in cash inside the bag, which police claim was for attempted business gain.

The official reported the alleged bribe attempt to authorities, and after investigations between Queensland Police and Australian Federal Police, the man was arrested as he attempted to board a flight at Sydney International Airport on Friday.

He was extradited to Queensland the next morning, and charged with one count of gift or offer a secret commission to an agent.

He appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.
