NSW coach Laurie Daley has flatly denied claims he suffered a ‘health scare’ in the middle of the State of Origin series and that it’s played a part in his reported decision not to continue in the role. Nevertheless, NRL fans have been sending well-wishes to Daley and expressing their hope that he’s all good.
Daley led the Blues to a remarkable series victory over Queensland, but reportedly won’t continue in the role next season. Speaking on the Fanatics TV podcast this week, Queensland legend Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin revealed that Daley had told him he’ll be stepping down.

“He told me the other day he’s not doing it (in 2027),” Vautin revealed. “I was really happy for Laurie Daley. He is one of the champions on earth as a person. Great fella and to see him win that and virtually go like this (up yours) to all his critics.”
The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday night that Daley will formally announce his decision to step down in coming days. The publication claimed Daley “battled health issues” throughout the series, but the NSW legend has now denied that.

Speaking on Sky Sports radio on Wednesday morning, Daley dismissed all suggestions that his health has been a factor. The 56-year-old said he’ll announce his decision when he’s ready, but firmly denied all claims of a ‘health scare’.
“I haven’t made any announcement yet, and when I’m ready to say something I will,” he said. “But in terms of my health, my health is good. I’m OK. So there’s no reason to suggest that I’m crook.”
On social media, fans were quick to wish Daley all the best and urged him to take his time with his decision. One person wrote: “I hope he is ok with his health issue first and foremost. Whatever we may think of him as a coach, Loz has always come across as a very decent man.”
Another commented: “All the best to him. Whatever he chooses to do, he’s earned it.” While a third added: “Hope he’s ok. Good on him going out on his own terms.”
If Daley does step down and the reports are on the money, it appears likely that one of Boyd Cordner or Matt King will get the gig for 2027. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has ruled himself out, and so has NSW legend Andrew Johns despite Daley publicly endorsing him.
