As other recent superhero films like Supergirl and last year’s Captain America: Brave New World tank at the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to swing high into box office success.
According to multiple reports, the Sony and Marvel Studios blockbuster is tracking for a monumental three-day opening when it is released this weekend in cinemas around the world (Australian audiences will be among the first to see the film when it premieres on Thursday, July 30.)
In the US alone, Sony is projecting a domestic opening of anywhere between $US190 million ($272 million) and $US195 million ($280 million).
However, several independent industry trackers believe the film will earn at least $US250 million ($358 million) in its opening weekend.
If these numbers eventuate, Brand New Day would sit among the other Spider-Man films that have the biggest-reported global openings ever – Spider-Man: No Way Home currently holds the number one spot for Sony, bringing in a massive $US600.5 million ($861 million) worldwide in its opening weekend back in 2021, and 2003’s Spider-Man is in second place with a $US381.6 million ($547 million) start.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to bring in the big bucks internationally, too.
According to Variety, Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie is tipped to earn at least $US275 million ($394 million) to $US300 million ($430 million) at the international box office in its opening weekend, although the outlet suspects the final number will likely eclipse these estimates.
As mentioned, its predecessor, No Way Home, opened to $US600.5 million ($861 million) worldwide when it was released in 2021, making it the third-biggest worldwide start ever.
The film is surpassed only by 2019’s Avengers: Endgame with $US1.22 billion ($1.7 billion) and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War with $US640.5 million ($919 million).
With Brand New Day’s premiere one day away, tickets to opening-night fan screenings and prime sessions are filling up fast here in Australia. It’s no surprise, really.
The film’s two trailers have already set viewership records, with the first trailer alone setting an all-time record by earning more than 700 million views globally within 24 hours of its March 18 release date.
