Panathinaikos disrupts Zalgiris’ summer plans. BasketNews sources have confirmed Greek media reports that the EuroLeague’s richest club is pursuing Nigel Williams-Goss.

Sportal was the first to report Panathinaikos’ interest in Williams-Goss, noting that discussions between the parties are already advanced.
The 31-year-old American signed a 2+1 contract with Zalgiris last summer, meaning his current agreement with the Lithuanian club does not include an exit clause this offseason.
However, Panathinaikos is putting significant financial pressure on the Kaunas club with a lucrative offer.
Offer nearly doubles salary?
Earlier, Greek journalist Sotiris Vetakis reported that Panathinaikos was also targeting former Zalgiris point guard Sylvain Francisco, who was reportedly offered an annual salary of €3 million.
The reported figures underline Panathinaikos’ financial strength in its search for another elite playmaker. Head coach Zeljko Obradovic is said to want another top-tier point guard on next season’s roster.
For comparison, Williams-Goss is expected to earn around €1.4 million with Zalgiris next season.
Panathinaikos would have the financial resources to pay a substantial buyout for Williams-Goss, but the American guard is viewed as a cornerstone of Zalgiris’ roster.
The highly regarded playmaker is considered a key piece of head coach Tomas Masiulis’ system.
Williams-Goss is expected to serve as the team’s primary creator, helping maximize both the potential of Zalgiris’ talented American newcomers (Carsen Edwards, Sterling Brown, Saben Lee) and Jonas Valanciunas’ presence in the paint.

Still, Panathinaikos’ offer puts Zalgiris in a difficult position.
The Lithuanian champions may be unwilling to part ways with their starting point guard at any price, especially given the shortage of elite playmakers on the market and the fact that the club has already completed its roster by signing Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu.
On the other hand, an offer nearly doubling Williams-Goss’ current salary could force Zalgiris to revisit his contract, increase his salary, and negotiate a new long-term agreement.
In theory, Zalgiris could secure Williams-Goss beyond next season by offering him an improved deal while removing his option to leave the club in the summer of 2027, though such a move would come with unplanned payroll costs.
According to Sportal, Panathinaikos hopes to resolve its point guard situation in the near future.
