Amateur Boxing Continues to Grow with Three Major Tournaments
The development of amateur boxing was one of the main topics discussed during the WBC’s Martes de Café, where several tournaments were presented to continue supporting the next generation of fledgling fighters in Mexico.
One of the featured events was the Verde y Oro Tournament in Acapulco, which will take place from July 30 through August 1 at the Jai Alai venue. Event promoter Iván Llamas expressed his excitement about the tournament and explained that, together with One Promotions, the event will also serve an important social purpose by helping the city of Acapulco recover from the damage caused by recent hurricanes.
The “José Sulaimán” National Championship was also officially announced. The tournament will be held on August 14, 15, and 16 at the Carmona Boxing Club Gym.
Event organizer César Carmona explained that the championship is named in honor of WBC Lifetime President Don José Sulaimán, recognizing his legacy and lifelong dedication to the development of boxing.
Another Verde y Oro Tournament was also announced for August 8 at the Plaza of the Palacio de Cortés Museum in Cuernavaca, Morelos. The event will be free to the public and will feature live music.
The qualifying rounds have already been completed, and the 18 championship finals will be contested on August 8. In addition to celebrating amateur boxing, the event will also honor General Emiliano Zapata on the anniversary of his birth. During the press conference, Zapata’s grandchildren were present and expressed their happiness that their grandfather’s legacy continues to live on through the sport of boxing.
Through these events, the WBC and the promoters involved continue to strengthen the growth of amateur boxing while providing new opportunities for future champions.
