Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there were positive signs in achieving Australia’s Closing the Gap targets despite only four of 19 being on track for the 2031 deadline, according to the latest report.

“We have got record investment in areas such as health, education, with proper schools funding, the remote housing program, remote jobs and training that we’re rolling out across remote Australia, including that area that we doubled in our last budget, we’ll continue to work,” Albanese told ABC’s News Breakfast.

The four targets on track related to early childhood education, economic participation, and land and waters that were subject to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s rights or interest.

“There are some positive signs, including in early education, which is critical. We want all Australians to have access to opportunity, and we’re working closely with state and territory governments. The targets are due to be met, of course, by 2031.

“But we have intergenerational issues. That’s the truth of the matter, and we are dealing with them in a practical way, measure by measure,” Albanese said.
