Poland is reeling after a concerning development on NATO soil, hours after Ukraine’s leader met with Donald Trump in the US.
A missile crashed deep inside the country’s borders after Vladimir Putin unleashed one of Russia’s biggest long-range attacks on Ukraine in months.
The country’s prime minister has said it “looked like” a Russian missile had crashed into a Polish field amid an attack on Ukraine. Although Donald Tusk said there was “no reason” to think Poland was the intended target.
At least seven people were killed in the attack on western Ukraine, close to Poland, including two children.
The attack has seriously amplified security concerns along NATO’s eastern border.
It came as Anthony Fauci, perhaps the world’s most famous scientist when it came to the Covid pandemic response, was eviscerated to his face by Republican politicians in a Senate hearing on Wednesday, US time.
Some Republicans have long wanted to blame Dr Fauci, and even jail him, for what they see as the US government’s heavy handed responses to Covid. That’s despite Dr Fauci serving under Donald Trump. Joe Biden pre-emptively pardoned the immunologist.
But Republican Rand Paul, who led the hearing on Wednesday, US time, said if Dr Fauci lied to the senators “his pre-emptive pardon won’t cover him”.
So Dr Fauci refused to answer almost all the questions posed – 111 times.
He said Mr Paul’s “obsession” with him was “unhinged”.
Meanwhile, Mr Trump has threatened to “beat the f**king s**t out of” Iran after what the US said was an attempted “surprise attack” on Tuesday evening, local time.
