Another successful day for New Zealand at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, with gold medals to weightlifter David Liti and para-cyclist Emma Foy.
Both had to overcome the odds for victory, with Liti trailling his Indian rival by 10kg after the snatch and need a personal best 223kg clean and jerk to overcome the deficit. He had two attempts available, but he needed only one.
Foy and pilot Jessie Hodges fell behind Australia in the best-of-three sprint format at the velodrome, and were then involved in a crash with their rivals at the start of the second race.
After medical checks and track inspection, the Kiwis won the re-race and then commanded the deciding race for gold.
Shot putter Tom Walsh narrowly missed his attempt at a shot put hattrick, after winning at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, pipped in the penultimate round by Nigerian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.
The women’s team pursuit took silver behind Australia, while para-cyclist Nicole Murray and the men’s pursuiters and para sprinter Anna Grimaldi all took bronze.
Murray briefly held the world record for the newly introduced 4000m individual pursuit for her C5 classification, but lost it within minutes to an Australian rival.
