It’s been more than 20 years since Darwin last hosted a Test cricket match – and Hot100 Breakfast duo Sam and Ant are determined to ensure the Top End never has to wait that long again.
As Australia prepares to take on Bangladesh in Darwin on August 13th, the boys are on a mission to make history.
You’ve heard of the The Richies cheer squad? Well, you’re about to meet The Weathers.
Sam and Ant are campaigning hard to get everybody in the stands at TIO Stadium dressed up as Jake Weatherald, Australia’s first-ever Darwin born and bred Test cricketer.
And they’ve got the perfect Jake Weatherald starter kit all sorted: All cricket fans need on the day is a bald cap, a sleeve tatt and an earring.
“If Australia sees this, it’s not going to take another 20 years for a Test match to come to the Top End,” said Sam and Ant, who’ve been busy drumming up support in the lead up to next month’s Test match, talking to Jake’s former cricket team mates and school teachers.
“We’re recruiting a lot of people – we’ve spoken to the great Nathan Lyon. We’ve got Jake Weatherald. He’s on board.”
They’ve even organised a special chant for the day as well: a fun twist on a classic Crowded House song.
Yep, you guessed it: Everywhere you go, always take the Weathers with you.
“As he walks out, ideally the whole stadium will sing with us. But we’ll definitely be singing our guts out.”
“If Australia sees this, it’s not going to take another 20 years for a Test match to come to Darwin.”
“Let’s show Australia how we do it in the Top End!”
