Brisbane’s season from hell has continued, with retiring captain Adam Reynolds suffering a concussion in their 30-6 loss against Newcastle.

The reigning premiers fell out of finals contention last weekend, but still hoped to send Reynolds out on a high towards the back-end of the season.

However, in a major blow on Saturday night, the champion halfback was floored by a rampaging Greg Marzhew that saw Reynolds stumble before being taken off.

“Reynolds is in real trouble, that’s a problem. I don’t think we see Adam Reynolds again tonight,” Dan Ginnane said on Fox League commentary.

Reynolds was deemed to be showing category one symptoms, prematurely ending his night, with fellow veteran Ben Hunt replacing him.

“He had trouble getting back to his feet, that’s a heavy hit,” Greg Alexander said.

To make matters worse, Deine Mariner was sin binned for a professional foul just moments after Reynolds was taken from the field for a HIA, before star forward Xavier Willison departed with an injury 10 minutes into the game.

Kalyn Ponga’s return from injury sparked the Knights early at Suncorp Stadium, with the visitors taking an early 10-0 lead.

Fletcher Sharpe scored a brilliant solo try, brushing past Reece Walsh in the process, before Dom Young continued his strong season on the wing.

Not long after Mariner’s stint in the bin finished, both teams were down to 12 men after a wild melee broke out that spilled over the sideline.

Young was dragged into touch in a dominant tackle from Ezra Mam, leading to a brief scuffle that was escalated by Jermaine McEwen, who sprinted in from a fair distance and forcefully dragged a Broncos player amid the chaos.

“Mam and Young are going at it, that was a bit of WWE and now here’s Jermaine McEwen – that had a bit of pepper on it,” Ginnane said.

“My goodness, the refs have got their hands full. What a bit of self-destruction.”

Alexander was stunned by the actions from the Knights back-rower.

“I thought it had settled down … I understand sticking up for your teammates, but that was crazy stuff and he ran a long way to get involved,” he said.

McEwen was rightfully binned for his part in the melee, before Broncos fullback Reece Walsh was also given his marching orders for pulling Young’s hair.

Walsh tried to plead with referee Grant Atkins, but it fell on deaf ears.

“I don’t know what he was thinking, he thought he’d get away with something cheeky … it was a bit of a brain snap,” Jared Waerea-Hargreaves said.

During the 12-on-12 period with the two players in the bin, Marzhew put the Knights further ahead on the scoreboard in what ended up a dominant win.
